Homework 6.11.20

Hello year 6,

It’s been wonderful seeing your excellent progress this week in our maths lessons on fractions and we look forward to developing our literacy skills further next week whilst writing diaries about Patagonia!

Your homework this weekend, and next weekend, is to prepare for a Welsh language oral task. We would like you to conside: in your opinion, who is the most inspirational hero, and why?

You could choose a hero we’ve studied this term or another person from the list below:

  • Malala
  • Paul Robeson
  • Martin Luther King
  • Rosa Parks
  • Michael D Jones
  • Shirley Bassey
  • Tanni Grey-Thompson
  • Betsi Cadwaladr

If you are keen to choose someone who is not on the list, it would be better if you haven’t undertaken homework on this hero this year already.

We would like you to research about the person’s background and the challenges they’ve had to overcome in order to succeed.

Which qualities have they developed?

Why do you think they are inspirational? Why are they important to you?

How do they compare to other heroes or other similar people?

What makes them unique, in your opinion?

Remember: when presenting, it’s essential that you are familiar with the facts and arguments that you want to share. Try to learn what you want to say. You could use flash cards to help prompt and remind you. You could also use short bullet points (containing a few words only) on screen. It’s important that you don’t read from the screen or script. Eye contact is crucial. We would prefer that you say less but that you’ve learnt it and are confident sharing, rather than reading a long script.

Be careful if using Google Translate. Read back over its recommendations to try and make sure it makes sense.

Here are some helpful openers when expressing your opinion:

Yn fy marn i,…

Does dim amheuaeth mai….

Mae yna sawl rheswm….

Mae’n amlwg bod….

Er bod……,

Tra bod…..,

Yr hyn sydd fwyaf trawiadol am …[ENW]… yw…………

Y peth sydd yn fy ysbrydoli fwyaf am [ENW] yw………

We hope to organise the task as some kind of class discussion / debate. Your presentations, therefore, will act as a springboard for further discussion and so your friends might ask you questions or challenge you on some of the things you’ve said. Be prepared to stand up for what you believe and, most importantly, give reasons for your opinion (so use the word “because” [oherwydd] a lot!).

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

Year 6 team
